The Love Triangle: Ron, Hermione and Lavender

Book to Movie Comparison

Let me start by saying that I am a HUGE Ron/Hermione shipper and I have loved the idea of them as a couple since Philosopher’s Stone! I do not think there is any other woman for Ron Weasley and there certainly is not any other man for Hermione Granger. It has always been obvious to me that they want and love each other. However, I think the most important thing to happen to their relationship and a major reason why they got so close by the beginning of Deathly Hallows is Lavender Brown.

Lavender Brown was not only Ron’s girlfriend. She was a catalyst for Hermione to admit her feelings. Lavender finally made Hermione realise that Ron could easily be taken away from her and that if she didn’t change her ways a bit and act on her feelings he would leave. Lavender brought out Hermione’s deepest and truest feelings for Ron.

Similarly, Lavender also made Ron figure out what he wanted in a woman. He has always wanted Hermione but he never knew what she thought of him; in his eyes, Hermione wanted a bloke more like Harry. Therefore, when he noticed that Lavender was interested, he took her as a comfort. However, he quickly learned that he needed more than a girl who would simply worship him and snog him. He needed substance and someone who could push him. Lavender finally made Ron realise that Hermione was the only woman who really made him want to be a better man and care for himself.

In short, Lavender is a very important character in the sixth Harry Potter book, not only for the Ron/Hermione relationship, but also just the comedy in general. So, when I went to the cinemas to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince I was optimistic for the Ron/Lavander/Hermione triangle. All the promotion, teaser trailers, and interviews with the cast and crew focused on the infamous love triangle and it was built up to be golden.

However, the R/L/Hr concept was lost in the movie and was lacklustre. It all started with the toothpaste scene. It was buffed to be a great new addition for the R/Hr storyline, however, Ron simply pointing and telling Hermione she had a spot of toothpaste on her chin and Hermione laughing a bit hysterically didn’t do much. He never touched her. They did not even share eye contact. It was an overhyped scene.

Strangers in a shop, exchanging glances... :)

Strangers in a shop, exchanging glances... :)

A bright side was Ron’s first encounter with Lavender at the joke shop. The simple look she gave him after a quiet “Hi Ron,” was a great teaser. I assumed great things were to come.

I was sadly mistaken. The entire R/Hr storyline, which was supposed to include awkward yet cute moments between them, was reduced to just a few scenes of them before Ron got a girlfriend. The first one was Hermione slapping his arm with a book. While it did show her frustration on his cool demeanour and provided a funny moment when Ron called her a lunatic, it didn’t really prove anything other than Hermione being annoyed that Ron ate when he should have cared for Harry’s safety.

Next, the scene when Ron comes to potions class didn’t really enforce anything R/Hr. Although Hermione did say that one of the smells she was attracted to was Spearmint toothpaste, it was said so fast and the actual toothpaste scene was so stale that hardly anyone who didn’t know about R/Hr love before would have got it. However, it did show a great deal of Lavender’s lust for Ron. When he stood by her, she stared at him and wavered a bit. It was perfect! It was obvious that she wanted him.

So, by the time Ron tried out for quidditch, it was established in the film that Lavender had a thing for Ron and that maybe Hermione had feelings for Ron too. Ron on the other hand was not seen to liking either of them. It was another nice dose of Lavender when she came to their table and offered Ron luck. She practically oozed with admiration. It was a pleasant moment for both Hermione and Lavender showing their feelings for Ron. Hermione gently waving at Ron as he looked up at her was very awe-worthy. Her jinxing Cormac so Ron would get the keeper position was nice as well: it was the first real action to show what she was willing to do to help Ron and it showed that she cared a great deal for him. The actual act itself is something Hermione would frown upon in any other situation. However, in the battle for Ron’s affection, Lavender was brilliant! Anytime Ron made a save, she bounced and squealed. She clapped and clutched her tissue. She was so keen on Ron and it was obvious. It was extremely canon!

Ron's fanclub

Yet, for Ron it didn’t establish much. Yes, when Cormac asked him to help him with Hermione he looked to her and frowned but that was about it. Afterwards didn’t help us learn how Ron felt for Hermione either. He was completely calm when telling Hermione that Cormac liked her. Book!Ron would have never been so casual about it and he probably would have hounded her about it. However, it was another great Ron/Lavender moment. The small wave and smile she gave him when he looked over at her was very cute.

The next scene for the triangle was the Three Broomsticks. Another let down. The “splash of ginger” did not mean anything. Hermione said it in barely a whisper and we didn’t even get to see Ron’s or Hermione’s faces when she said it. There was a good moment when Hermione asked Ron what he would do if Ginny saw them snogging. It was great how Hermione said it so matter-of-factly and how Ron was so confused by her statement. It showed a bit more on Hermione’s part of her liking Ron but all it did in Ron’s case was show us how confused he was by her words. Except for the, “Did you hear what she said about her and I snogging, as if,” comment he gave to Harry on their way back to Hogwarts. It rather gave the impression that he couldn’t get it out of his mind since she said it.

The first and perfect moment for Ron showing his feelings for Hermione was during his chat with Harry, when he said Hermione had nice skin. It was terribly needed. In the book Half Blood Prince, it was plain obvious Ron fancied Hermione – there were so many moments which proved his feelings. But in the movie, up to this moment, he never really showed emotion towards her. So, the skin comment was a breath of fresh air.

When the game day finally came, I was ready for some good triangle action! However, it was ruined when Ron and Hermione talked about the Christmas party. In the book, this is such an intense and crucial moment for them. Ron is angry and extremely jealous about the situation. He hassles Hermione about the Slug Club and accuses her of bringing Cormac so she could hook up with him. Hermione is upset with his accusations and blurts that she wanted to bring him. Embarrassment takes over for both of them and Ron is taken aback. He softly asks, “You were going to ask me?” Hermione follows it with “Yes! But if you’d rather I hooked up with McLaggen…” when Ron says, “No, I wouldn’t,” very quietly. They stare at each other until Harry interrupts.

This moment is one of the best moments in Half-Blood Prince for R/Hr because Harry tells us that he knew they would get together eventually and that he always knew they liked each other. It really established there was real magic between them. However, in the movie it was reduced to Ron saying causally, “I assume you’ll be taking McLaggen,” and Hermione rushes, “Actually I was going to ask you.” They do not look at each other. They just go back to reading and eating. It was a disappointment.

The actual game was brilliant at showing how different Hermione and Lavender were. Lavender was bouncy and cheery while Hermione smirked and clapped. It made us curious as to how Ron would choose between them.

The kiss after the win was perfect! I loved how Lavender pulled Ron to her and snogged his face off. I also loved how surprised Hermione looked after seeing it. The entire moment with Harry and the birds was lovely. Hermione crying and asking Harry what it’s like seeing Ginny with Dean really showed us for the first time that her feelings for Ron were real. It was her turn in a sense to feel the pain like Ron had to in Goblet of Fire when she was with Krum. I loved watching her cry and shake. Hermione loves Ron and it really hurt her when he ended up with Lavender. I was absolutely gobsmacked.

Ron and Lavender storming in made me tense up. I loved how giggly Lavender was and how she did not care for Hermione. Ron, on the other hand, took it like how Book!Ron would have. All his excitement vanished and he seemed so scared but tried to cover it up with, “What’s with the birds?” I’m sure he was not only confused about seeing Hermione crying but also seeing her close with Harry. I loved how he snatched his arm back when Lavender tried to pull him away. It was a good gesture in showing us that he cared more about her than having fun with Lavender.

I think the best R/Hr moment in the film happened when Hermione set the birds on him and he ducked out of the way. Before he left, Ron gave Hermione this terribly moving expression of confusion and a bit of guilt and rejection. Hermione’s eyes were full of tears but she stared him down. It told him that he had hurt her and I think it really sank in for Ron. It was so beautiful. It was the most canon Ron and Hermione in the movie thus far.

Everything after that was bland. Lavender in the book is less of a stalker and more of just a girl in love/lust over Ron. She really brought completion to Hermione. She was a real character and a real girl. I really did feel sorry for her and I enjoyed her character. But Lavender in the movie was hard to feel for. Her fogging the window and writing R+L was good for showing her crazy side but that’s it. Showing Lavender as a creeper does not help the R/Hr ship. It has to be shown why Hermione was so scared and worried. Also, Ron explaining that what he and Lav had was chemical and then “will it last, how knows?” and “There’s no stopping it,” – it’s so not Ron. In the book, he was not that casual and cool with his new girlfriend. Sure, he wanted to move on but he was not at all confident and comfortable with it. In the film, this scene didn’t help the R/L/Hr triangle or R/Hr ship, or build angst. It just made Ron look like a jerk.

There was a nice scene though when Hermione passed by their compartment and Ron looked after her longingly. However, the scene with the necklace was underdone and Hermione shouting how she did not care if Ron snogged Lavender in the library was less impressive that it should have been. While it was nice that she tried to be strong and act like she didn’t care, there should have been more sorrow in her voice and not anger. The “I have to go vomit,” line was a bad choice as well. It made for good comedy but it wasn’t great for Hermione’s character. It showed more annoyance of Lavender and less her being upset that Ron was with someone else.

So, it all led up to the important poisoning scene. Lavender was great when she rushed at Ron’s side and fussed over him. Her face and body language was incredibly canon. Hermione, on the other hand, was a disappointment. In the book she is quiet and pale and terribly upset. In the movie, she simply looked at him. It did not show her deep emotion for him or how she was scared that after weeks without speaking to him, she might never get a chance to speak to him again.

The argument between Lavender and Hermione was great. I loved how Hermione called her a daft dimbo and Lavender said now she found Ron interesting. When Ron stirred and moaned Hermione’s name three times I almost cried. It was spectacular. I loved Hermione face when she recognized what he had said and how Lavender ran off crying. I gushed when she took his hand and he moved. Hermione could not stop smiling and I couldn’t either. It was a great moment and was the only book moment that didn’t disappoint me. The additional, “It’s about time, isn’t it?” from Ginny was a pleasant surprise and I think it demolished some of the H/Hr love when Harry smiled at her and Hermione whispered, “Oh shut up,” after taking Ron’s hand. Dumbledore adding, “Mr. Weasley is in good care,” was a total shot out to Hermione. I squeed at that!

rhrl1

The most important Ron/Hermione scene in Half-Blood Prince

However, the break up with Lavender scene was terrible. I don’t like how Ron had nothing to do with it. It gives the impression that he would not have left her if Lavender hadn’t heard him say Hermione’s name. Even though he said, “I’m glad to get rid of her” it would have had more of an impact on how he felt nothing for Lavender if they had broken up as they did in the book. The “Ron you’re making it snow” line might as well have been cut out. It is one of my favourite moments in the book. Hermione takes Ron’s hand and guides his wand down and then he brushes snow off her shoulder. Lavender bursts into tears afterwards. It’s very good for displaying the sexual tension between Ron and Hermione. However, in the movie it was five seconds of Hermione making the statement, touching Ron’s wrist, and Harry brushing snow off the table. It is as if Ron and Hermione aren’t allowed to touch each other at all. I don’t like how Lavender was glaring at them and digging her fork into the table. She was supposed to be crying. Movie!Lavender is a stocker, but I wish her character were more sensitive and human. It would have complicated and added more drama to the triangle.

rhrl2

One of the R/Hr moments that didn't make the final cut

Well, that was the last of the R/L/Hr triangle. After that, it was as if nothing happened. Ron and Hermione went back to never really talking or giving each other eye contact and Lavender was never seen again.

As a whole, the entire R/L/Hr triangle and the building of Ron and Hermione’s love for each other was a bust. While there were a few cute moments, it was too hyped up and did not deliver. There wasn’t enough Lavender for one. Her character was completely butchered. There wasn’t a lot of indication that Ron wanted Hermione, there was not enough of him with Lavender, and there wasn’t any real dialogue of Ron expressing his frustration and annoyance with Lavender like there was in the book. Hermione wasn’t nearly as upset over things and didn’t show her anger as she did in the book. The book Half-Blood Prince really focused on Ron’s and Hermione’s mutual feelings, but in the movie it was sped through and watered down.

Of course, the stars behind the characters of Ron, Lavender, and Hermione had magic or lack thereof of their own.

Rupert Grint and Jessie Cave made an excellent team. Jessie showed Lavender’s passion, lust, excitement, and cattiness perfectly! She and Rupert on screen together were gold! The scene where she kisses him on the staircase was extremely sexy and I loved the spark between them right before she kissed him after the win. Though both actors said it was a bit scary, they nailed the scane and it is obvious they were comfortable with each other.

Won-Won and Lav-Lav

Won-Won and Lav-Lav

Another great moment was one that I’m not sure was actually meant to be. After they come back from Christmas break Lavender gives Ron the necklace and jumps on his back. Jessie and Rupert both laughed as he tightened his grip on her and helped her push higher on his back. I don’t know if they – or at least Rupert – was supposed to laugh at that, but it showed how much fun they had working together. Jessie has said herself that she is very keen on Rupert; and he has said nothing but good things about her as well. He has called her a good kisser, a great actress, and sweet and funny person. It showed on screen. My only complaint is that they did not get more screen time together! I was expecting Jessie to be in the majority of the movie but her screen time was terribly short. It is a shame, because she and Rupert are so funny and have natural chemistry. They presented their characters and their relationship well. I could not get enough of them!

Rupert and Emma Watson usually have great chemistry on screen, but in Half-Blood Prince, it was lost. Their usual spark and fire was absent. First, they hardly had any screen time together talking. Surprisingly, both Ron AND Hermione were not in Half-Blood Prince as much as I thought they would be. They took a back seat to Dumbledore and Draco. Besides, anytime they were together and they were talking, Ron was looking at Harry. He seemed to talk to Harry and then had Hermione looking at him. Rupert and Emma did not have a single moment where I was blown away. They usually share beautiful looks like in Order of the Phoenix or have great bickering like in Prisoner of Azkaban, but none of it was present in Half-Blood Prince. I think the biggest reason is that Rupert and Dan stole the show. Ron and Harry’s friendship was amplified ten times the normal. They were blokes and worked so well together.

I should add that Rupert was amazing overall. He did everything he could do melt the ice between him and Emma and he was fantastic as Ron.

To conclude, the love triangle was not what it could have been, and we should have seen more of Rupert’s interactions with his two female co-stars. While the entire teenage angst plot line made for good comedy and even some serious moments, when it comes to delivering the best from the book Half-Blood Prince, the movie failed. Steve Kloves should have wiped off his glasses and re-read the book before embarking on writing a script.

Fanvideo Spotlight

No matter if you have amazing editing skills, are a newbie or have absolutely no clue how to make a fanvideo, everybody who is a fan of something or someone can enjoy these clips, which can really be considered visual poetry and actual artworks.

wicked_jo1Fanvideos can range from character tributes to comic parodies and shipping/slash feasts. They come in many different styles, and there’s at least one for each person’s tastes and ships, many times even breaching the barriers of a single fandom (crossover). Most of us host and watch fanvideos on YouTube, and if you type in “fanvideo” on their search bar, you’ll get around 173000 results, so… lots and lots to choose from.

Did you know that vidding (meaning the practice of creating fanvideos) started in the 1970s? That’s right, it all started at a Star Trek convention, with Kandy Fong (who used a slide projector and a cassette player).

Today, fan made videos are a big part of almost any fandom, be it Lord of The Rings, Dragon Ball Z, Harry Potter, or the one featured in this article: the Rupert Grint fandom – which you are most probably a part of, if you’re reading this text! Also, nowadays most vidders aren’t digging up their old cassette players but using instead video editing software such as Windows Movie Maker (a simple, basic program, good for newbies), Sony Vegas Pro, One True Media (free online editor), Corel Video Studio, and many others, which allow us to do more sophisticated fanvideos.

wicked_jo3

But back to what really matters here – Rupert Grint. There are hundreds of videos dedicated to him and edited by his loyal fans, but some of them certainly stand out from the rest for various reasons. I’ll put one particular Rupert fanvideo in the spotlight and explain why it is, in my opinion, a must watch for any fan. So, with no further ado, the spotlight is on…

Why is it in the spotlight?

Audio: The vidder has combined a great song, which sets the soft, beautiful tone of the video, with audio excerpts in which we can hear various quotes from the interviews with Rupert, his co-stars etc. The song is “Ashes & Wine” by A Fine Frenzy, which not only fits Rupert and the overall style of the clip, but it’s very cleverly put together with the clips’ audio: because the song takes a back seat, you don’t have that annoying experience of trying to hear whatever people are saying while the song is playing very loudly at the same time.

wicked_jo4

Clips/Pictures: The video is a nice mixture of some of the fans’ favorite clips (such as the press conference for Harry Potter and the Philosopher/Sorcerer Stone, behind the scenes clips, interviews, movie clips etc), pictures (promotional stills, photoshoots, photocalls …) and quotes (some of them coming from Rupert himself and others from co-stars, movie critics and movie directors). All of these elements are, in my opinion, very well selected, because they show Rupert’s personality/public persona, his talent and his relationship with co-workers and fans.

wicked_jo5

Editing: The editing fits the song perfectly, being very soft and simple. Too many crazy effects and transitions between the clips would make it too busy, complicated and fast paced for the song and would just not be appropriate for the video’s style. However, what stands out in the editing is the color scheme used: soft, warm but very distinct and original – just like Rupert himself.

wicked_jo6

Feedback from the fans: Well, I’ve shared my thoughts about the video, but of course I couldn’t choose it to be on spotlight based only on my personal opinion. So let’s see what other Rupert fans had to say about it (from the Youtube comments page):

“Hey that was a really good video! You pieced together all the clips and photos and quotes so well. :) I love Rupert Grint!! Who doesn’t right?”

~ percivalwemysmadison

“for me this is the best rupert vid”

~ p0kerFace88

“most beautiful Rupert tribute. :) great work! ♥ ”

~ MissSatansbratenqirl

And that’s all for this fanvideo spotlight. Hopefully this was a chance for all of you to discover or remember a great video about our favorite young actor. Feel free to give us your own opinions and thoughts about fanvideos or vidding in general and this clip in particular.

Movie Review: Cible émouvante!

It was August 2008 when we first heard the rumor about Rupert Grint being involved with a new movie called Wild Target. It wasn’t long until it was confirmed that indeed Rupert would be filming a remake of the 1993 French movie called Cible émouvante. I can still remember how happy and excited we all were – can you?

I was way beyond happy when I realized that Pierre Salvadori was the writer of the original version because I had just recently watched this other movie scripted by him, called Hors de Prix with Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh. This French romantic comedy fascinated me; so I realised that something pretty good must be coming our way.

I am lucky to have these great friends who are forced to listen to me talking about Rupert and his projects all the time. A couple of days after I told them about Wild Target, one of my best mates delivered the original movie Cible émouvante right to my door! What a surprise! Alas: no subtitles. “Duh!” I thought. It was time to put in practice the three courses of French I had taken.

I’m going to try not to spoil the movie too much for you, although I will mention some important plot details. Besides, the movie is in French and it made me realize that, even if you did take those French classes in the past, you have to keep practicing the language, otherwise you forget a lot. Yeah, I didn’t understand most of the dialogue. Pity.

As soon as Cible émouvante started, I had a feeling that it would be a very cool movie. The first one to appear was Victor Meynard (played by Jean Rochefort), who was practicing his English while “working” (i.e. killing people). Then, some minutes later, there he was… Antoine (Guillaume Depardieu) — in the English version it will be Rupert’s character “Tony”. Due to some circumstances you’ll get to see, Antoine a.k.a. Tony becomes Victor’s apprentice and they continue their journey together.

My thoughts after the first couple of minutes: will Rupert’s character use a gun too, like Victor does? Will he be chasing the bad guys? Will he be injured?

A strange family: Antoine, Renee and Victor

A strange family: Antoine, Renee and Victor

As you might have read, Victor got an assignment to get rid of Renée (Marie Trintignant), a beautiful eccentric woman who double-crossed a very dangerous man and now he wants revenge. But Victor fails to murder her, and as the movie progresses, the main trio get together to escape from the bad guys hired now to get rid of them all. Thus “the trio” head up to Victor’s mom’s house and things start to get crazy. Just wait and see!

Try to picture Rupert handling a gun, running his ass off, taking hot tub baths, smoking, etc… If the English version stays true to the French original, maybe we’ll get a chance to see a scene between Tony (Rupert Grint) and Rose (Emily Blunt) where she is trying to seduce him. Interesting! In a recent exclusive interview with ICM Rupert has said that Wild Target is quite similar to the French original, so… let’s hope for the best!

One of my favorite scenes is when Antoine and Reneé throw a party for Victor’s birthday (I think it’s his birthday). We don’t get to see the party itself, but only the aftermath, a day later: all the empty bottles of the wine they drank, polaroids of them having fun dropped the floor, food leftovers, balloons, etc. – it seems to have been a helluva party for the three of them!

It was exciting to see the character that Rupert will play in Wild Target: I can easily imagine him doing it. Antoine is kind of a quiet character, he talks with his face and we all know that’s something that Rupert works perfectly. Not that Antoine doesn’t talk, because he does and he is also a very funny guy! I would love to see a more talkative Tony though, because I’d love Rupert to be allowed to use his great verbal talent – but then again, how many people are able to say everything with their face alone? Either way, Rupert will do it perfectly.

"The Trio" in a car chase scene

"The Trio" in a car chase scene

I really enjoyed other characters as well. Victor is this serious assassin with some beautiful feelings ready to explode inside him; Renée is a pretty woman, but don’t let her beauty fool you, she’s a bit dangerous too, but it’s all for a good purpose.

Rupert will share credit with great actors such as Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Everett, Eileen Atkins and Martin Freeman; most of these actors have made the names for themselves playing comedic characters; and we mustn’t forget that Wild Target was directed by another comedy great, a BAFTA winning writer, actor and director Jonathan Lynn.

I had a brilliant time watching Cible émouvante; I’ve seen it three times already, and even though I can’t understand all of the dialogue, it makes me laugh a lot. Thus I may assure you that the English version will be a very entertaining film too. I’m sure you are all very excited for Wild Target and can’t wait to see it; but, until it’s released, we can only do what one of Rupert’s shirts tells us: “Keep calm and carry on”.

Finally

Author: mugglemama
Rating: PG-13

Hermione sat curled up on the sofa in the Burrow’s lounge, a book open in her lap and her hands limp at her sides. Her eyes were focused on the dying embers in the fireplace as she reflected on the past week.

Fred had been buried a mere thirty-six hours earlier. To keep herself from dwelling on the grieving faces of the Weasleys, Hermione began her nightly ritual of cataloguing each physical contact with Ron since Voldemort’s defeat: 24 hugs, 8 pecks on the cheek, 3 kisses on her forehead, one not-quite-chaste kiss on the lips the night before, and one large hand on her bum, but so briefly she couldn’t be certain it was intentional.

She was distracted from her thoughts as Ron threw himself down beside her, his leg sprawling comfortably against hers. He closed his eyes and laid his head back, breathing a slow sigh of relief. “I’m so glad it’s all over and done with.” As he spoke, the little finger of his hand reached out and stroked the back of hers. “′specially all that stuff, ya know, between you and me…” He turned his head, opening one eye and giving her a half smile.

Hermione jerked her hand away. “What?”

Ron bolted upright and, in his usual articulate manner, explained, “Well… uh, Hermione, you… I mean, um… you know.”

“No, Ron, I don’t know!” Hermione jumped off the sofa, fists clenched in anger. “I can’t believe you’re finishing with me before we even got properly started!”

“Finishing?” Ron sprang to his feet. “What the hell are you on about?”

Not intimidated by Ron’s towering frame, Hermione took a step forward and poked him in his chest. “You” -poke- “just said you” -poke- “were glad we” -poke- “were done!”

“Well I am glad we’re done!” Ron grabbed her wrist to prevent further bruising. “Done with all that shit we put ourselves through.”

Hermione wrenched her hand from his grasp. “What do you mean by that?

“I’m done fighting how I feel!”

“And how is that, exactly?”

Ron gripped her arms. “I’m done pretending I’m not in love with you, dammit!”

Hermione’s expression immediately softened and her mouth formed a silent “Oh.” Ron eased his hold but didn’t let go as they stared at each other in silence. Finally, Hermione spoke. “I…I don’t want to fight it anymore either.”

“So…you too?” Ron ran his hands down her arms to her hands, leaving goose pimples on her flesh.

“Yes, very much.”

“It’s over then…the ‘just friends’ thing?”

“It has been for awhile.” She squeezed his hands gently.

“But now it’s official, yea?”

“It’s official.” She smiled up at him; he was grinning from ear to ear. “Now what?”

Ron licked his lips and blushed slightly as he slid his hand behind her neck and pulled her close. “This,” he whispered against her lips.

She wouldn’t be Hermione if she didn’t take notes: one far-from-chaste kiss, and one – oh, two! – definitely intentional hands on her bottom.

Finally.

Spot of Bother

Author: mugglemama
Rating: PG-13

I don’t care how posh this tent is compared to the Muggle ones Harry described, the truth is tents are not the most comfortable of places. ‘Specially when sharing one with seven other blokes, and definitely not when you’ve barely fallen asleep only to be woken up by a large damp spot on your bunk and in your pants.

I’ve had this happen before, I’m fourteen after all. I’ve just never had a dream that featured my best mate before – and I’m not referring to Harry.

I remember laughing to myself as I was falling asleep, thinking about Hermione’s reaction to that nutter who didn’t want to wear Muggle trousers. Suddenly I’m imagining Hermione standing there, looking different – prettier somehow – asking me if I’d like feeling a breeze ‘round my privates. Then this ‘dream Hermione’ lifts up my robes and … well, one thing led to another, … which led to my current problem.

It’s downright barmy that I’d have these thoughts about Hermione, she’s not even a proper girl. I mean, I know she’s a girl (she sleeps in the girls’ dorm and all); she’s just not like those girls in the magazines Fred and George hide under their mattresses, all soft and squishy looking. Thinking about it though, Hermione was pretty soft when she hugged me last year while bawling about Buckbeak; she smelled really good too. And she definitely looks like she’d be squishier this year.

Damn! I can’t think like that now – I’ve gotta get this mess cleaned up before Fred or George find out. What I am gonna do? This isn’t like school where I just wave my wand and clean the stains from my sheets. Not that I’d be ‘scourgifying’ my privates, even if I could. At home Mum makes sure all us boys have spare sheets in our rooms (one of the benefits of having five older brothers, Mum understands these things and doesn’t make a fuss).

Extra sheets – of course! There must be some around this tent somewhere. I’ll just check in this cupboard here-

“Ron? Is that you?”

Shit! Who’s that? “Charlie?”

“Yea Ronnie … what’s up?”

“Nothing.”

“You sure? Looks like you’ve got yourself a spot of, er, bother,” he says, pointing at my crotch.

“Um … uh …”

With a wave of his wand my pajamas are clean; he sends a Tergeo towards my bunk too.

“Er, uh … thanks.” I stammer, my ears burning.

“No problem. Nothing to worry about, perfectly normal.”

“Yea, well, okay … ‘night then.” I wanna crawl into my bunk and die, only Charlie’s giving me this funny look.

“Um … is there anything else?”

“No, … just … your friend, Hermione, … she seems like a lovely girl.”

Where the hell did that come from? And why is Charlie checking out Hermione?

“Um, yea … I g-guess so.”

“Like you hadn’t noticed,” he scoffs.

“Wh-why do you say that?”

“Because, little brother,” he claps my shoulder, “you talk in your sleep,” laughing as he heads off to bed.

Bugger!

On Fanzines, Ice Cream And Whatnot

Hello fellow Rupert Grint fans, and welcome to the first edition of Grintastic!

The idea for an interactive, online “fanzine” was born about this time last year. While Ice Cream Man focuses on the talents of our favorite actor, Rupert Grint, Grintastic was created to focus on the many talents of his dedicated fanbase. Since the forums are booming with lots of love for your fellow fans and an innate desire to share your various forms of artwork with one another, creating Grintastic was an obvious choice.

A Short History of “Fanzines”

The term “fanzine” was first used back in October of 1940, by the science fiction community. Fans of sci-fi movies and literature needed a place to share similar interests and talents. And so, the “fanzine” was born. Not long after, everyone else followed suit. Horror movie buffs, comic book creaters/readers, sports fanatics, rock and roll lovers, and punkers were soon making their own variations of the publication. Remember Blag magazine? Of course you do! When Sarah and Sally Edwards first came up with the idea, Blag started out as a fanzine, too.

punkzines

When the fanzines first kicked off, all someone needed to make such a publication was a great idea, a typewriter, and a copier. Often made in small numbers, they were frequently hard to come by. In addition, they were also either sold at an extremely cheap price, or even given away for free.

Fanzines have come quite a long way since 1940. These publications can still be found being passed out in front of clubs, and even appear on the internet. These are known as ezines; or prozines, which are made by business people looking to expand their network of customers.

The Grintastic Fanzine

Grintastic is a bi-montly “publication” with lots of stuff to do, all aimed at you, the fan! You can guarantee that we’ll always have something new and fun for you, with things like contests, quizzes, fanfics, fanart and comics. We’ll also be sure to include essays, opinions, and editorials for you to read; plus, exclusive treats that you’ll only find on Grintastic to adorn your frequent online haunts! And last, but certainly not least, our Rupert-centric podcasts.

When we say that ICM is “by the fans, for the fans”, that’s no joke. If it were not for any of you rabid Rupert fans, ICM wouldn’t be where it is now. So, this is for all of you. We love you guys! Enjoy!

The Trio And Me

Alysha’s Life Story

My life has never been easy. In fact, the very thought of easiness is still a mystery to me. I’m an orphan. I don’t know my parents, where they are, what they look like, or if they are even alive. I have no close or distant relatives that I know about either. According to the hospital I was found in, all I had on me was a tag with my first and last name on it and my birthday. All I know about my past is that I’m from New Zealand.

When I was five I got shipped off to England where I would spend the next 13 years of my life. I was in and out of foster care and orphanages.  It was hard. I was lonely. I didn’t have friends or anyone to talk to. I tried to cope with keeping quiet and keeping my head down. However, with nothing really to do or anyone to talk to I mostly stayed in my bed and thought about random things.

It was 1997. I was eleven and at a home when my entire life changed. One day a delivery van came with a large order of books. All the kids got to pick out one book out of this huge box. There were loads of different types like puzzle books, art, coloring, animals, everything. Well, this one caught my eye:

pottercvrFor some reason the image just struck me. I went to my bed and started reading. And I fell in love immediately. I was eleven. I was all by myself trying to survive. The teachers and staff always wanted to gloss over our situation and stayed optimistic. But in Harry Potter J.K. Rowling told it like it was.

I was engrossed in the book. I didn’t bother to go outside anymore. At night I’d stay up in the bathroom and read. It was amazing.

I instantly bonded with Harry Potter. His parents were killed when he just a baby. He had to stay with his terrible relatives. He was treated like dirt. No one had any stories to tell him about his parents or other family members. All he knew was that he had a scar on his forehead due to the car crash which had destroyed his family. He stayed in a cupboard under the stairs and spent most of his time lying there thinking about nothing and everything.

I understood perfectly. I knew exactly what Harry was going through and for the first time in all my life I felt connected to someone else. It helped that he was described as having dark hair, being small and scrawny and underfeed. That basically fit me as well, lol.

I related to him so deeply and as I read I could easily put myself in his place. What Harry saw I could see so clearly and what he felt burned in my heart.

Ron Weasley easily became my sunshine. He had me laughing from the very beginning. I loved how brave and honest and kind he was. I never had a friend like that. As I would read I pictured his freckly face smiling at me and reassuring that things would be okay. It helped me a lot. I also loved how he was from such a big, vibrant, and loving family. Family is something I never knew and still don’t fully understand. I don’t know if I have any brothers or sisters and he was with six. It was gnarly. I fantasized about my parents being like Molly and Arthur. I couldn’t imagine how lucky all the Weasley kids must have felt.

Hermione Granger was the girl I inspired to be like. I never considered myself very smart or bold like her, but she made me want to be a stronger and more determined girl. I considered myself tough but not strong. I loved the girl power and how she kept up and surpassed the boys without a hint of superiority.

The Trio became my family. They were fierce friends and loved each other. Ron and Harry’s friendship moved me from the day one. They instantly connected like they were just meant to be friends. It made me think that everything happened for a reason and maybe my situation would better me somehow.

I thought about this as related to Harry: if Harry’s parents didn’t die, they would have seen him off at the train station and probably would have gotten him there early. They would have found him a comfortable seat with other kids possibly.

If this would have happened, he probably never would have run into Ron. Harry wouldn’t have been famous so there would have been no reason for anyone to point him out. This made me feel better for Harry. All these terrible things happened to him so he could find his friends and moreover, Ronald Bilius Weasley, a person who would quickly become Harry’s light source and soul mate.

So, I read it in a few days. Then I read it again and again and again. When I was taken into foster care awhile later, I took the book with me. It was the only possession I had. I wasn’t supposed to take the book, but I didn’t care. I was twelve at the time. The family I was staying with had children and they actually had books one and two. I was in heaven. I snuck into the boy’s room and read Chamber of Secrets. It was incredible. I loved how the story developed and how The Trio was a unit and even more how Ron and Harry were so funny and close in it.

I didn’t stay at the foster home long. I got shipped back to the home. I cried. I wanted the book. One of the heads at the home noticed how much I loved HP. She promised to get me the books and no matter where I was shipped off to, she’d send me the next one. I had to work for them though. I had to clean, cook, cut grass, and all the things Harry had to do at home.

So, by the time the first movie was in production you could say I was the hardest of hardcore fan. I’m not kidding when I say Harry Potter saved my life. Some people have family, music, friends, art; anything that keeps them grounded and keeps them hanging on even in the darkest of moments. I had Harry Potter. Reading about his adventures and his friendship with Ron turned even my strongest frown into a smile. Harry Potter was my entire existence. I could simply escape all the horrors and pain of the life around me and follow him and his friends into Hogwarts.

alysha2Anyway, I was not excited for the movie. I know how Hollywood just LOVES to glam up books. They love to cut dialog, add things for shock value, dumb down characters so they’re relatable and my favorite, sex up things.

People all around me talked about the movie and how they wanted to see it. I didn’t. I stayed away from it. I was 15 when it premiered. I saw the trailer on TV. I was staying at a foster home at the time. While it looked appealing I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. By the time the first movie came out books 1-4 were out, and I was engrossed by Goblet of Fire. It’s my favorite book. I loved how Harry and Ron’s friendship was tested and how Harry finally had his encounter with Voldemort and his parents. I also loved how there was character death. It made it more real for me.

So, over the years, I kept seeing trailers for the movies. I saw Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson grow up. I thought Rupert just got hotter and hotter but still, I couldn’t watch the movies. Harry Potter meant the world to me and I couldn’t risk watching the movies demolish the story. It would have broken my heart.

So, by 2004 I was 18 and I had books 1-5. I was finally out of the care system and I moved back to New Zealand. I kept the old books that I earned through the years but I bought fresh ones to keep in storage. I was madly in love with the books but I still never went to see the movies, although they were everywhere! The toys, games, websites, clothes, and posters… but none of this captured me. People talked about the movies: some said how they loved them and others how highly disappointing the movies had been. I was happy that I didn’t watch them. I didn’t want any of the HP magic that I saw in my head be ruined by the images of the movies.

So, it wasn’t until 2007 and I was 21 that I saw the movies. By that time movies 1-5 were out. I was in Hertfordshire with friends and, by chance, I met Rupert and his father at a restaurant. Rupert was very lovely and kind to me. Though I hadn’t seen him act in the HP series, I had seen him in Driving Lessons and Thunderpants. I was a fan of his and had seen interviews and everything else of him. I always read good reviews of him playing Ron Weasley so that was a huge plus, and his charm, kindness, sexiness, and just overall personality drew me in. I figured if he was that incredible in person, then his portrayal of Ron had to be major.

When I got back home to New Zealand I bought all the DVDs and watched the movies in one day.

Okay, first, I’m so happy I didn’t watch as they came out. I was right. In my opinion the movies are watered down. So many lines have been moved and changed, the physical appearances of some of the characters are way off, but what gets me is that the “Magic” isn’t really there. Yes, there is actual magic but for me the big CG images and the green screen and all the animation overshadow the actual story.

Harry Potter is about a young wizard, trying to figure out who he is, where his destiny lies and how he’s supposed to be the savior of the wizarding world when he doesn’t fully understand the task. That kind of magic is lost. The spectacular has overthrown the meaning. The actual story and the raw emotions of the characters aren’t as highlighted and important as they should be. If a person who has never read the books watches the movies, I doubt he or she would have any real idea what is going on besides the obvious. So many things have been skipped around and completed taken away or added.

alysha1However, from an entertainment point of view, they movies are good. They’re funny, there are great visual effects, and the chemistry of Rupert, Dan, and Emma is marvelous.

Rupert is amazing as Ron. It doesn’t matter that he’s not as tall or skinny or freckly. He has Ron’s charm and humor and blind impulsiveness down packed. Rupert is the reason I have given the movies the time of day and he’s one of the main reasons I’ve stuck with it. Book!Ron and Movie!Ron are pretty much the same when it comes to humor and impulsiveness, but Movie!Ron doesn’t have the passionate determination and loyalty that Book!Ron has. In books, he’s more than just the bloke who has the one liners — but sometimes on screen that has been his only role. However, Movie!Ron is so much sexier than my Book!Ron is, lol.

I like Dan Radcliffe as Harry. Harry has a dry kind of emo-ness to him that I believe Dan pulls off well. Sometimes he has this look on his face that is so Book!Harry. It’s almost as if he’s under the stairs again, thinking about nothing and everything at the same time. I look like that sometimes too. However, Book!Harry has so much more humor and attitude that they don’t let Movie!Harry have. It’s sad. Harry Potter is so witty, and I wish they’d let Dan work with it more.

I don’t like Movie!Hermione that much. She’s too Hollywood. I’m sure Emma Watson does her best, but still. As a movie character Hermione is great but, in my opinion, she does not reflect Book!Hermione.

So, what did I think of the movies?

Philosopher’s Stone: It was better than I thought it would be. I loved the look of Harry. He was just how I saw him in my head. I loved how they tried to keep the movie canon. Obviously a lot of things were changed, but it wasn’t anything major. I loved the relationship between Harry and Hagrid. It was very much as it was in the book and the animosity between Ron and Hermione was great too. The scene at the end with Quirrell and Voldemort was well done: I loved how it looked and how it was filmed. Rupert lived up to his good reviews. I knew already that he was a great actor but seeing him portray Ron was a breath of fresh air. The book was magical and the movie reflected that magic. Thumbs up!

alysha5Chamber of Secrets: it was another good one. It was very true to the book and Rupert and Dan were flawless together. The animation like the Mandrakes and spiders, and all the flying car scenes were even better than how I imagined. Rupert really became Ron in this one. He was Best Mate and Big Brother and he belching slugs was superb! Five stars for this movie.

alysha4Prisoner of Azkaban: I was very disappointed. Hermione was no longer Hermione. While the look of the film was how I imagined, very dark and sort of mysterious, the storyline was butchered. There were so many things changed. Everything from the Firebolt to the quidditch matches and all the hilarious fighting over the Cat and Rat were gone. Even the big scene with Sirius and Lupin was not as emotional as it was in the book. The only thing that stood out and that I liked was when Ron was being taken by The Grim. How Rupert played that gave me chills. I also really loved Harry and his Patronus and the time turner scene was really funny. So, besides those saving graces, the movie was a huge let down.

alysha3Goblet of Fire: This is my favorite book so I was extremely nervous watching it. I loved the maze sequence and the black lake. The final battle with Harry and Voldemort was breathtaking. Dan did a great job bringing out Harry in these scenes. The Yule Ball scene was very funny and Rupert and Emma did that very well, and it helps that Rupert was extremely buff in this movie, lol. However, generally it was another let down. What I loved about the book so much was that Harry finally realized what Ron and Hermione meant to him. Harry not speaking to Ron killed him. I loved how empty he was without him. It also showed how much he relied on Hermione and how determined she was. She helped him with the summoning spells and stuck by him. None of this was seen the movie. So much friendship was cut and replaced with cheesy comedy. So, it didn’t live up the book as I hoped it would.

Order of the Phoenix: loved it!! We saw a bit of actual friendship and Trio love and the characters just seemed to grow and click. Now, there are some things I didn’t like. Harry going back in time and seeing his father was a huge let down. It was several pages long in the book and was so amazing and detailed, but in the movie reduced to 15 seconds. I didn’t like how there was no quidditch and how characters like Angelina, the twins, Ginny, Dean, and Cho were lost completely. I also didn’t like how Prefects were never talked about. I was excited to see the friction between Ron and Harry. That aside, the movie was great. Luna was perfect. The DA scenes were really neat and I loved Voldemort possessing Harry and him using Ron and Hermione to get through it with the flashback moment. I loved Harry talking to Ron and Hermione about the kiss. Rupert, Dan, and Emma never had more chemistry. I loved how for the first time I believed they were all friends. In the movies it’s so easy to get caught up in the glamour. People forget that these three teens are best friends and need each other. For the first time I saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione as friends and as somewhat regular kids. The special effects were spot on: I loved how the dementors looked and the big battle at the end with Dumbledore and Voldemort was spectacular and epic. Of course my favorite scene was when Harry had a nightmare and he shot out of bed and Ron was there watching him with this look of deep concern on his face. The Best Mates friendship was alive and well in this movie.

So overall, comparing book and movie, books win hands down. There’s the magic and story there. The movies are okay. They are not as terrible I thought, but they aren’t as great as they could be. They’re good entertainment and I really enjoy watching Rupert and Dan act together.

For someone like me who is diehard Harry Potter and has been from the beginning, the movies disappoint me when it comes to keeping canon. However they fulfilled my expectations in the sense that they were a lot better that I originally anticipated. With all the magic it’s easy to get a bit cheesy and over the top; but I think the style is very realistic, and yet enough to make you believe it’s another world. However, they let me down in the sense of the characters just being how they are on the surface. We lose the idea of the Trio being teens trying to survive and how much they all need each other. Not all the acting is spectacular but some of the younger cast members like Rupert Grint and Evanna Lynch give the movie light.

I can’t emphasise enough how happy I am that I waited and how much Rupert has impressed me. He is a main component to the movie franchise’s success, and I can’t wait to see more of him in the future.

Super Grint!

It’s a bird!  It’s a plane! No, it’s GINGERMAN!

Comic book mastermind Stan Lee has called upon everybody’s favorite red head, Rupert Grint, to play a character with amazing powers, but this time instead of magical powers he has Super Powers!!  Rupert has signed on to play the lead character in the live action adaption of Stan’s latest comic book entitled GINGERMAN.

gingermanThe story follows an average ginger fellow who comes to find out that the ginger gene is not the genetic defect it was once believed to be but rather the key to the human races evolution to superior beings.

“I have always created characters who defy the odds” says Lee, “and Gingerphobia is an odd that Gingerman defies every time he dons the red and green.”

An orphan born of two gingers, Jimmy Jameson aka Gingerman discovers, as he exits his pubescent phase, that he possesses amazing super powers including the ability to fly, control fire with his mind, and make people enter a hypnotic state by simply looking them in the eyes.  Grint says that playing the first lead ginger super hero is “a wicked experience that I never thought I would get to do.”

“The tights were something that was a little hard to get used to,” said Grint.  “The costume ladies must have lost the measurements a lot because they kept bringing me in for more.  They finally decided it would be best to just do a cast of my whole body, which I thought was a bit much, but they seemed determined to get it.”

GINGERMAN will burn its way onto the screen next summer.

Rupert Grint And Daniel Radcliffe: Best Mates, Or Just Colleagues? PART ONE!

Prof. Trelawney’s Divination Class

DISCLAIMER:
I am in no way affiliated with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and their respective families. I do not know them personally, and I do not know any of their friends, relatives or casual acquaintances.
I am solely responsible for the contents of this text, which expresses my personal opinions (which may or may not be accurate). Oh, and I’m neither clairvoyant nor psychic.
The article has been written for fun: no harm intended. People who feel that this is an invasion of Daniel’s and Rupert’s privacy should not read this text. People who think that astrology equals loads of tosh shouldn’t read it either.
The article is not recommended to readers aged 15 and younger.
Due to its length, the article has been split in three parts. This is PART ONE.

Lots of Harry Potter fans who have marvelled at Daniel Radcliffe‘s and Rupert Grint‘s on-screen chemistry, must have wondered: are they as good friends in private life as Harry Potter and Ron Weasley are in the movies? Well, an astrological analysis might help us answer this question. Unfortunately, Rupert’s and Dan’s exact times of birth are unknown, thus I cannot calculate their exact natal charts. However, even the analysis based solely on their dates of birth might give us interesting and accurate information, and a deeper insight into their individual personalities and mutual compatibility.

First, let’s take a look at the boys’ individual charts, and then we’ll compare them.

dannatalchart

Daniel Radcliffe' Natal Chart -- DOB: 23 July 1989, time unknown; Equal Houses System

Daniel Radcliffe has no less than four planets in Leo – apart from his Sun, he also has Mercury, Venus and Mars in this sign. Mercury is in conjunction with his Sun, while Venus is in conjunction with Mars. Dan’s signature sign (the sum of all elements and modalities) is also Leo, and his Sun is positioned on the zero degree of Leo. All these positions greatly emphasise all positive and negative qualities of this Zodiac sign. Daniel is a super-Leo, someone who embodies pretty much all virtues and faults associated with Leo.

Daniel also has a triple conjunction (aka stellium) of three “heavyweights” (Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) in Capricorn. Therefore, Capricorn is also very prominent in his chart, and the powerful impact of Saturn in its “home” sign of Capricorn greatly influences Dan’s character and destiny. Indeed, Sun in Leo and Saturn in Capricorn are the strongest planets in his chart.

Dan’s Sun and Mercury are in the aspect of quincunx (150 degrees) with the stellium in Capricorn. Quincunxes always signify adjustments – for better or worse, willy-nilly – and in this case they indicate all the adjustments Dan had to make in his life since he became a movie star. However, the preponderance of Fixed modalities in Dan’s chart (5 planets are in fixed signs) indicates that, despite all those quincunxes, Dan is actually a person who finds it difficult to adjust to anything and achieve compromise. This is a constant source of tension in his life, and his independent and self-sufficient Leo nature is constantly challenged by all the expectations that his work (and people associated with it) place upon him.

It is interesting to observe that all three of them – Dan, Emma and Rupert – have the elements of Fire and Earth prominent in their charts. However, while in Rupert’s case Earth is the dominant element, and Fire the secondary, Dan and Emma are both under the impact of Fire, with Earth being their secondary element. All three of them share a conflict between the Fiery (passionate, energetic, creative, extroverted) and the Earthly (grounded, cautious, reserved, practical) sides of their characters. All three of them lack the elements of Air and Water, which means that they are inclined to let emotions rule actions, and they have difficulty in truly understanding others and expressing their deepest emotions.

Dan’s natal planets form the configuration of “basket”: nine planets occupy one half of the sky, while a single planet opposes them. This planet (in his case, the Moon in Pisces) is the “handle” of the “basket”: this planet serves as an outlet for all the conflicting energies represented by the other nine planets.

Physically, Daniel looks like a typical Leo. Human Leos often resemble their animal namesakes! A typical human Leo has a big head attached to a relatively small body; they are usually short in stature, with short limbs, but they compensate for the lack of inches by having a loud voice and big attitude! They all talk a lot, laugh a lot, and roar occasionally! Leos are usually blessed with big, thick, often wavy or curly hair; they also have thick eyebrows, and lots of facial and body hair; and, last but not least, big shiny eyes. Think of other Leo celebrities such as Michael J Fox, Martin Sheen, Madonna, Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Robert DeNiro and many others – all of them fit this description perfectly. Of course, from time to time you will meet a very tall and bald Leo, but these are exceptions, and one may assume that those people have lots of planets in other signs, or a conflicting Ascendant. Also, from time to time you will meet a seemingly very shy, timid and quiet Leo person – but just try to insult them or contradict their beliefs, and you’ll see that they are everything but “timid”! Never disturb a sleeping Lion!

I should note that Dan’s trademark character Harry Potter is also a Leo (so is JK Rowling herself, she “shares” her birthday with Harry – 31st July!) Dan was obviously chosen to play Harry because he looked the part! Also, note that JKR has made the symbol of Gryffindor – a lion, so she probably takes great pride in her zodiac sign.

Sun in Leo marks one who has a strong will and great ambition. Leo people are generally more concerned with the “big picture” than with the numerous small details in life. As such, they tend to enjoy being in authority and using whatever means are available to achieve their desires. As a typical Leo, Dan enjoys being the centre of attention and wants others to think well of him. His creative accomplishments put him in the spotlight. He has a great zest for life; he is self-assured, willful and proud, and not easily swayed by others’ opinions. He sees no problem in expressing himself vociferously in ANY situation, occasionally causing problems since his opinion is not always asked for!

Other people see Dan as a confident and dominant (domineering) character, someone who is very proud of himself, very dignified and a bit vain, someone who enjoys the success and privilege. He prefers rich and elegant surroundings and possessions. He is a show-off, and his natural assertiveness drives him to impress others with his ideas and opinions. However, his intimate relationships may suffer from a difficulty to compromise. If he wants to have good, mature relationships, he should try to develop better listening habits around others. In short, Dan is a charismatic person who has a strong ambition and desire to succeed; he is confident and energetic when dealing with others and he truly believes that nothing is impossible. He is a theatrical person who lives his life on a grand scale, and whose energy and joie de vivre are truly captivating.

With Mercury in Leo, Dan displays a great ability to focus his concentration and articulate thoughts. He displays a dramatic flair when speaking and likes to command the attention of all around him, occasionally being loud or verbose. Dan has a dynamic intellect; he enjoys proving his point and selling his ideas to others, though he sometimes gets carried away and drives the point into the ground. Furthermore, with his Mercury square Pluto, Dan has a penetrating mind that attempts to sway others; thus he has the propensity for bluntness. He must combat his secretive nature and strong pride and will which may be misapplied. He shows a great deal of self-confidence when it comes to tackling problems, but he is also prone to patronise others, and he can be a (verbal) bully. He values no opinion other than his own, and despite his keen mind, he will often stubbornly reject even constructive advice. He is always convinced that his own ideas are correct and he enjoys persuading others that they are; he gets very defensive when his beliefs and principles are challenged. He appreciates truth and honesty, but only if they support his own point of view! He also loves being asked for advice and counsel.

Sun conjunct Mercury in Leo links the mind and ego. Dan is eloquent and quick witted, but also prone to get things done with sheer willpower. He hates it when people try to contradict him, and has difficulty in being objective. This conjunction confers a very sharp mind, great sense of humour, great mental energy, and a fluency in speech. Being an only child, and a child-star since his pre-teen days, Dan is used to being the centre of attention, and he is a natural born charmer/entertainer/showman.

Sun trine Moon gives Dan good health and makes him a well adjusted and self confident young man. He is fond of children and attractive to the opposite sex. This is the aspect of popularity, and it gives him fans of all ages. He is a friendly bloke, very adept socially, and he interacts well with others. Dan is optimistic and confident, and this aspect indicates that he comes from a stable and loving home.

Dan’s Moon is in Pisces, a sign completely different from Leo, which shows that his parents (Sun and Moon) were a case of “opposites attract”. Leo/Pisces is a very dramatic combination: these people LOVE drama, in all segments of their lives! Dan is a true drama queen, on and off screen. He has strong feelings and is extremely sensitive. He hates being criticised and tends to react emotionally to every situation he comes across. He tends to absorb the energy of others, so he should avoid negative people. He has a rich, creative and lively imagination; he is very intuitive, and may be quite psychic. The signs of Leo and Pisces united are often present in the horoscopes of actors: in Dan’s case, as we know, it was his mother (Moon) who worked in the movie industry (Pisces) but behind-the-scenes (Pisces) and she pushed him into acting (Leo, Pisces). As I’ve mentioned, Moon provides outlet in Dan’s chart: one may conclude that Dan’s mother (Moon) is the most important person in his life, and I can safely say that acting has a therapeutic effect on Dan’s nervous system.

Since the sign of Leo is so prominent in his chart, it is safe to assume that Dan won’t try to develop the feminine, caring side of his personality, indicated by this Moon in Pisces; instead, he will seek these qualities in his partners. He will be attracted to shy, reserved partners, who display a great deal of sensitivity when interacting with others. Dan’s spouse might also be someone from the movie industry. He is attracted to people who are gracious to both friends and strangers, and who display an element of impressionability. Leo people are usually attracted to people who are somehow “inferior” to them, because they want their partner/spouse to admire and worship them!

With his Moon square Jupiter, Dan is apt to indulge in food, television and such. He is friendly, but suffers from a conflict between false pride and his true feelings. The aspect of Mercury trine Moon gives Dan an excellent memory, lots of common sense and great stores of wisdom (Rupert has this aspect too). Both boys were destined to thrive in a business predicated on communication; they tend to be perceptive and clever in their affairs; they have alert minds and think fast on their feet. However, with his Mercury in Leo/Moon in Pisces Dan is a natural communicator, conversationalist, show-off; while Rupert with his Mercury in Virgo/Moon in Capricorn combination is a lot more reserved in his speech, and prefers to apply his verbal talents more constructively, i.e. at work!

While Sun trine Moon promises that Dan will have a successful partnership/marriage, this is somewhat obscured by his aspect of Moon square Uranus. This aspect makes him an imaginative and curious person, yet he is also quite eccentric and suffers from extreme moodiness. He craves excitement and he is prone to sacrifice a stable family life just for the sake of having fun. Moon, Jupiter and Uranus form the configuration of T-square, so Dan is going to ruin lots of his professional, emotional and friendly relationships due to his bigotry, selfishness, eccentricity and unpredictability.

As for Dan’s emotional life, as I’ve mentioned, he has Venus conjunct Mars in Leo. This configuration indicates a passionate person whose life is dominated by an extremely strong sexual drive. Venus in Leo makes him a natural romantic who enjoys the excitement and challenge of meeting new people. The spotlight is his favourite place to show off his witty love of life in both social and romantic climates. Dan is also a bit vain, and he likes to surround himself with people who make him look good. He is friendly and outgoing, naturally compassionate to all he meets, while remaining loyal to his loved ones and family. Despite his adventurous nature, Leo is a fixed (i.e. stable) sign, which means that Dan’s affections, which are usually demonstrative, frank and open, do stay fixed for a long time. He is sunny and outgoing, he likes to please others; he has a knack of getting the things he wants out of life. He throws himself headlessly into any challenge, be it professional or emotional.

Dan takes friendships quite seriously and remains loyal and true to those to whom he is attached. But for him, love is mixed with pride and respect. Relationships are over when he loses respect for his partner – or when he feels that his partner has lost respect for him. He loves to surround himself with the powerful, important and influential people, and thus may appear arrogant.

Venus conjunct Mars confers great personal magnetism and sex appeal. Dan is extremely passionate and romantic, often torn between lust and love. His entire life is full of drama, and this especially applies to his emotional life! Thus: passionate love affairs, public break-ups, drama drama drama! Dan may also have exhibitionistic and voyeuristic tendencies; in any case, his strong libido pervades every aspect of his life. As we all know, Dan had no hesitations/reservations about taking his kit off for Equus – enough said!

Mars in Leo makes Dan extremely self-willed, proud, passionate, possessive, jealous, domineering. Despite his tiny physique, he feels ready to “conquer the world”. His co-stars have described him as a “hyper” person, and that’s indeed true: he is extremely energetic, bold and courageous, always at the ready to partake in some exciting activity, including some downright dangerous thrill-seeking stunts. He loves to be the one to initiate significant actions, and loves it when people expect a lot of him. However, when his dignity or pride is threatened, he tends to become sarcastic, arrogant and domineering. He tends to take any challenge or resistance he meets as a personal affront. He is very stubborn about his right to live his life according to your his principles: the songs that describe Dan best are “My Way” and “Born To Be Wild”!

Venus sextile Jupiter makes Daniel an optimistic, cheerful and gregarious lad. People with this aspect attract good emotional fortune, so Dan will never experience financial hardship, and all his business endeavours will be successful. Jupiter in Gemini makes Dan an avid student, with wide-ranging interests. Venus trine Uranus brings a lot of love, good fortune and excitement into his life. Dan has an unique personal style, strong personal magnetism and an effervescent personality, thus he easily attracts romances.

The aspects of Sun quincunx Uranus, Venus trine Uranus and Moon square Uranus make Dan very curious and adventurous; coupled with his ardent sexual passion, as indicated by Venus conjunct Mars, he is someone who cannot stand being alone, and seeks love everywhere. He may be quite indiscriminative when it comes to choosing a partner.

The stellium in Capricorn, especially with Saturn included, makes Dan a somewhat precocious kid, who had to grow before his time and who is used to hanging out with older people. Indeed, he was never a proper child: he didn’t have many friends his age, he didn’t have siblings, he grew up among adults, started working from a very early age, became a movie star at the age of 10, and had to endorse all responsibilities associated with this. We see a powerful father figure, a father who expected too much of his child and made sure his demands were met and obeyed. The aspect of quincunx between Sun and Saturn indicates that Dan found it hard to adjust to a life of a person who is constantly scrutinised and needs supervision/protection 24/7. Dan is the type of person who wants to do things his own way and is quite unhappy by the control that he feels his parents, agents, movie producers and publicists have over his life.

Saturn in Capricorn has turned our sunny and irreverent Dan into a serious-minded kid, who has the ability to take on responsibilities which come with being Harry Potter. Even more so, Dan actually enjoys them! He is practical and thrifty, a good organiser, and he enjoys the working environment which enables him to take a clearly defined project through to its logical conclusion. He is an achiever who prides himself on his ability to focus his attention on some worthy goal and then attain it. With three planets in Capricorn and Pluto in Scorpio, Dan is willing to tackle projects that are considered mysterious, remote or taboo.

Will he have an acting career after his Potter days? It is difficult to say without knowing his exact Ascendant and MidHeaven. As a Leo, he greatly enjoys acting, drama, being in the spotlight, and the popularity and publicity that comes with it. However, with so many planets in the inflexible signs of Leo and Capricorn, he finds it hard to truly identify with the characters he is supposed to embody. He is an ego-driven person, and may find it difficult to turn himself into someone else. Thus he will be the best in the roles which require of him to play himself! He will probably try to pursue a career on stage, because as a true Leo he loves the applause and the interaction with his audience. On the other hand, Leo people also enjoy telling others what to do, i.e. directing, so he will probably turn to directing movies and theatre plays at some point. But I do not think he will ever give up on acting completely. In any case, he will never cease being a celebrity..

Rupert Grint's Natal Chart: DOB 24 August 1988, time unknown; Equal Houses System

Rupert Grint has four planets in the element of Earth (Sun and Mercury in Virgo, Moon and Neptune in Capricorn) and three planets in Fire (Mars in Aries, Saturn and Uranus in Sagittarius). Therefore, Earth is his dominant element, but Fire is also quite prominent. Most people who have met Rupert describe him as very “down-to-Earth”, and his chart confirms this claim. The preponderance of Earth elements bestows considerable common sense and practicality, and the presence of Fire indicates a blending of realism and compromise, making him diplomatic, and yet assertive.

Fire stands for creative energy, and Rupert has plenty of it, but the dominance of Earth makes him quite realistic about his potentials, and helps him direct his energy in a constructive and goal oriented direction. Down to Earth our Rupert is, but also: realistic, practical, unsentimental and quite self-contained. He likes all things natural, loves animals and fresh air, likes to be outdoors and play sports. He is very much a physically aware person, very manly but also quite sensuous, and prone to all the pleasures of life.

The element of Earth also makes him outwardly quiet and unassuming. He is very cautious, when it comes to letting new people into his life, and he is not the one to open up at first acquaintance. But within his circle of close friends, he is everything but quiet, and definitely not as “inarticulate” as he might appear to strangers! Rupert’s calm, quiet and “shy” demeanour actually hides a creative, contradictory and restless nature. Still water runs deep – this is so Rupert! He does not like people who are too showy, too loud, too aggressive, too pushy or too intellectual. He prefers common sense, fair play and mutual respect. Empty talk leaves him cold.

With four Cardinal planets (Moon, Venus, Mars and Neptune), Rupert is active: he likes to be in charge, he accepts responsibilities easily, and he’s good at initiating new projects. With lots of Mutable planets (Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus), he is disposed to going out of the way to accommodate others; he is pleasant and fun, and tends to adapt easily to novel circumstances. Since Rupert has few Fixed modalities, he rarely ‘stays put’ or fixes attentions or affections on any one thing for a long time. The good side of this is that he can do many things at once. The bad side is that Rupert’s memory, patience and concentration aren’t exemplary; being so many-sided, he finds it difficult to focus, concentrate and settle into one place. He tends to act first and think later, to initiate many things and then leave them unfinished, and he will have difficulty in achieving a long-term stability in all domains of his life.

His planets form the pattern of Star (which means that there is no major concentration of planets in a single sign or quality), and his Signature sign (i.e. the sum of all elements and modalities) is Virgo. Virgo is a negative and mutable sign, and this fluid, unsettled quality of Rupert is obvious. Being a natural born actor, Rupert is able to play most diverse roles, try on different identities, transform himself completely, and change as required! His life will be very exciting, dynamic, and full of sudden changes of scenery (both on and off set!).

Rupert likes to make his own decisions, take charge and be in the driver’s seat. He rarely lacks exciting ideas, and generally prefers to mind his own business… alone! He is tolerant, but hates when people tell him what to do. He does not like being bossed around or scrutinised. But he rarely fights for his right fiercely… instead, he nods in agreement – and then does things his own way! Since he can be very charming and persuasive, in most cases he will get away with this kind of attitude.

The fact that his Sun is on the 1st degree of Virgo adds a further Fire/Cardinal facet to his chart, and makes him way more ambitious, competitive, courageous, fun loving and headstrong than an average Virgo. This type of horoscope usually indicates a first-born child, especially a male first-born, and Rupert is no exception. He has a strong ambition and desire to succeed, and realises a lot is expected from him. He expects a lot from himself too, and is used to shouldering the heavy burden of responsibilities without complaining.

Therefore, despite his “sleepy” and “laid-back” appearance, Rupert is actually quite energetic, active, alert and sharp. His senses are excellently developed, especially his sight, smell and touch. He has a very good eye for detail, which contributes to his ability to impersonate others easily. He exhibits a lot of initiative, and can be infectiously enthusiastic and creative. He is rather discrete and private, likes to mind his own business and hates gossip. He does not like people confiding in him either. He is also quite nervous, and tends to get irritated easily. He does not like to talk about his problems; instead he bottles up everything inside, and then lets it explode from time to time. He rarely gets really angry, but when he does, he goes barking mad! Most Virgoans tend to deal with problems by burying themselves into work. However, Rupert loves to indulge into daydreaming and become a bit escapist.

The fact that he was put into work at the age of 11 made him grow up early, become aware of his flaws and start working on correcting them. When he started to work as an actor, he also became more responsible and professional, and handled all the pressure with admirable maturity. As he grows older, he will become increasingly hard working, ambitious and career-obsessed.

The three planets that form a trine aspect with his Sun (Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) are retrograde. This, and the fact that his Moon and Neptune are in Capricorn, indicates that Rupert is an old soul, a soul that had been through many reincarnations and accumulated many experiences. Of course, you may not believe in reincarnation, but if you do, then imagine Rupert as an old soul trapped in the body of a cunning, mischievous boy! His destiny in this life is to put his artistic talent in the service of bringing joy to other people. He became aware of his “mission” at a very early age, and as time goes on, he will become increasingly immersed in his role.

Moon conjunct Neptune sextile Pluto indicates a person who is a master of his own mind and body, and who can even change the course of events solely on the basis of his mind power. No wonder that Rupert’s very first movie role was that of a wizard – a wizard indeed, and he won the role of Ron because he wanted it so badly that his (subconscious) mind basically programmed the course of events! It was his destiny to become an actor, and to trade his “normal” identity for his movie star persona. As he grows older, he will try to build a wall around him, to prevent the intruders from invading his most intimate space, and he will try to keep his private life as private as possible.

Both Rupert’s Sun and Moon are in Earth signs, which explains why people think of him as someone down-to-Earth. People with the Sun in Virgo/Moon in Capricorn combination tend to be: introverted, self-conscious, melancholic, quiet, hard working, realistic, practical, private, ambitious; stoic, humble, cautious, unassuming, aloof and materialistic.

Sun in Virgo makes Rupert someone who pays meticulous attention to every detail in life, although most people around him are not aware of this. He may look detached, but he does not miss a thing! When Rupert does a job, he does it very well, and he takes great pride in his accomplishments. He truly is a self-made man, and he likes to rely on himself before seeking advice from others. He trusts himself more than he trusts anyone else, and he would rather do things himself than go for help. Perfection in every sense of the word is important to him, and he is very cautious in entering any type of relationship. Unlike most Virgoans, he is not very tidy (Mars in Aries is too busy to clean after himself!), but he does notice other people’s flaws easily. He is both critical and self-critical, but he tends to be harder on himself than on others, and he is too shy to voice his disappointment in people who had let him down. He is very sensitive to other people’s needs and willing to serve others, because he believes that helping others is his duty and a true sign of justice – and he believes in justice and fair play. He is able to remain above many of the petty things in life and come through crises with his hands clean. With Virgo’s precision and Mars in Aries’ animal-like senses and great coordination, no wonder that Rupert’s sport of choice is golf, which requires a bit of both.

Rupert’s Sun receives strong aspects from four “heavyweights” (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune). All of them together promise that he will have a long life and be blessed with excellent health – unless he ruins it with indulgent behaviour! Since Virgo is a Mercurial sign, he will always look younger than he is, and even as an old man he will preserve his youthful appearance and charm.

Sun square Jupiter makes him a person who sometimes tends to talk big and act little. Jupiter is a beneficiary, but in Rupert’s case it is in the sign of its “exile”, Gemini, and it afflicts his Sun. Rupert wants to be a true Virgo/Capricorn ambitious kind of guy, he wants to be on top, he thinks he deserves it, but often he is not willing to work hard for it. He must learn patience and overcome the tendencies to exaggerate and exercise poor judgement. He might also be good in finding excuses for his laziness, and even manipulating others to do his work instead of him. He may indulge a bit too much in food and drink, which will result in him putting on weight easily. Jupiter in Gemini confirms Rupert as someone who is very youthful, playful, rebellious, clever (but not wise), cunning, materialistic and earthly. His interests are wide-ranging and he enjoys exercises in logic and reason.

Sun trine Saturn makes Rupert an achievement oriented person. The fact that his Sun is in aspect with both Saturn and Uranus (which are in close conjunction in Sagittarius) adds an element of unpredictability to him. These two planets are exact opposites: Saturn is conservative, Uranus progressive; Saturn likes the status quo, Uranus enjoys disturbing it; Saturn is past, Uranus is future; Saturn is rock, Uranus is thunder; Saturn is stiff, Uranus extravagant; Saturn hates being shocked, while Uranus takes great pleasure in shocking others. Since both these planets aspect Rupert’s Sun together, he will often vacillate between these extremes, taking turns in being conservative and shocking people. This will mostly affect the aspects of his life represented by the sign of Sagittarius: his philosophical, religious and political views, his attitude towards education, etc. Saturn urges Rupert to be practical and orderly, to respect traditional authority figures and to be thankful and supportive of the laws and institutions which govern his life; but Uranus makes him join groups of people who have the tendency to think that all ideas, customs and traditions from the past are outmoded and irrelevant. Through his friends he might become attracted to radically new ideas, philosophies and religions. He will travel the world, explore various cultures, etc.

Sun trine Uranus makes him charitable, as he truly feels a bond between himself and humanity. It is likely that he will get involved with UNICEF or something like that, because he wants to contribute to social justice. Fair play and justice for all – that is Rupert’s ideal. He is known for being calm, cool and detached; indeed, he is a bit of a loner, but he does want to be a part of the social groups around him and feel like he belongs and makes a difference. Uranus makes him very intuitive and he often has flashes of brilliance; however, Saturn puts a damper on these flashes. Hence, Rupert will often suppress his own brilliant ideas and spend too much time dissecting them, instead of just acting on impulse. He should learn to trust his instincts more. Sun trine Uranus is also responsible for Rupert’s cracking sense of humour (alongside Mercury in Virgo trine Moon). These aspects somewhat lighten his rather serious nature and make him a lot more easygoing than he would otherwise be. His enthusiasm and laughter are truly infectious.

Sun trine Neptune makes him a very refined person, with a love of the arts and good taste. He is sensitive to others and much more compassionate than an average Virgo/Capricorn person. This aspect is also “to blame” for his artistic gifts – not just acting, but also music and drawing.

With Moon in Capricorn, Rupert tends to be reserved, cautious and remote when dealing with other people and events. His predilection for ambition and a drive to succeed serve to mask inner doubts and worries. He is rather shy and insecure about his abilities, but has a sense of dignity and pride, and will work hard on maintaining his professional reputation. He tends to be very hard on himself and often feels like a failure. He is willing to work hard for his success, and he prefers a long hard climb to the top. Rupert will never push situations, or step on another person’s back to get to the top – but he will get there. Don’t be fooled by his sleepy appearance – he was born to work. His earthiness, integrity, consideration for others and caring nature easily win other people. He is serious and shy, dutiful and patient, and very uncomfortable in those situations where spontaneous emotional reactions are expected from him. He is an achiever who prefers doing practical, worthwhile things that produce tangible results. For him, practical needs always win out over emotional considerations, and he often forgets that he too has the right to comfort, security and love. His love is long-enduring and when he makes an emotional commitment, he’s in it for the long haul.

People with Moon in Capricorn are sometimes described as cold, unemotional, secretive, stiff, domineering, even cruel, and they surely have difficulties in expressing their emotions. In fact, they prefer to suppress them, and show a cool and collected face in every situation. Moon is in the sign of its “exile”, which means that all good sides of this “light” (i.e. its maternal, caring, protective, overtly sensitive, compassionate nature) are somewhat suppressed/denied. He does not open up easily, if at all, and he does not share his most intimate thoughts with anyone. Rupert is not a show-off or attention seeker; his day job brings him a lot of exposure, but he does not enjoy that. He likes to have a small circle of close friends and family around him, and he is very restrictive when it comes to letting new people inside the circle.

As a rule, displaying affection is very difficult for any Virgo/Capricorn person. They often feel like they are not worth being loved, so they have difficulties in reciprocating other people’s loving feelings. On the other hand, when Rupert finds someone he can trust, he is loyal beyond the call of duty, and can be truly overbearing in relationships. He also tends to hang on to people, places and things, and has difficulty in letting go. Rupert likes to hide behind a role, and he often finds it easier to act someone else’s emotions than to deal with his own. He does not like to face the cold facts of life objectively, and has a predilection for self-deceiving, self-isolation and utopian thinking.

Moon trine Mercury in Virgo is probably the best aspect in Rupert’s chart. He has an alert mind and thinks fast on his feet, although he is able to hide this well. He possesses a good common sense, and when interested in something, he can be a good conversationalists. This aspect makes him a very funny bloke, able to crack others up with his wits and quips, and he surely enjoys comedies! With Moon sextile Pluto he adapts to change well and is not overly nostalgic. The common sense that these two aspects signify is very important for him when dealing with disappointments and bad luck; he is able to rationalise those, get back on his feet soon and recover. This is important because Virgo/Capricorn people are somewhat pessimistic, and when things get bad, they are prone to bouts of depression.

Moon conjunct Neptune makes him very impressionable and confirms his strong psychic tendencies. He daydreams a lot, and may have prophetic dreams, or well-developed sixth sense, and he might be true living radar. He is very idealistic, a true visionary and dreamer, but also rather moody, apt to hide his true feelings, wear masks and embrace different roles. He is very creative and extremely devoted to his ideals and to his loved ones. Rupert is an idealist who must believe in something beyond his normal everyday existence; a dreamer who likes to escape to a world of his own creation. He should learn to live for himself and not let his sense of responsibility dominate his life.

Rupert’s Venus is well-positioned in Cancer, making him romantic, caring, well-mannered, polite and lovable. People like him because of his non-aggressive, non-threatening manner. He needs emotional support himself and is willing to give it to others. He is very sensitive in his romantic life and, as such, very vulnerable to the actions of loved ones. He needs security in the domestic scene, and will most likely postpone getting married until he is completely sure that he has made a good choice. He wants to nourish and protect people he cares for. He prefers cosying up at home with the loved one to showing off in public with his squeeze. His faithful devotion is one of his greatest gifts, but he does not know how to demand his own rights and may also become too dependent on others.

However, this wonderful, caring and loving Venus is opposed to his cold and reserved Moon, so he vacillates between these extremes all the time. He wants to be romantic and passionate, but is often afraid to plunge into a new relationship; he wants to care about others, but he is afraid that they might use him; he wants to express his affections openly, but is afraid of getting hurt. Therefore, he puts a damper on his emotions and often feels unloved and incapable of having a good, mature relationship.

The aspect of Venus in Cancer square Mars in Aries has made our Rupert a sex symbol; and Venus trine Pluto confers his lofty, intense ability to love. Deep down inside he is romantic and passionate, only he rarely lets others see this side of his nature. Venus square Mars makes him an exceptional lover; he wants his advances to be answered immediately, wants his feelings reciprocated, expects too much from others, and is quite disappointed when things do not go his way! Once he finally meets the right person, he will be very affectionate and caring, devoted and honest… but only then. Moon trine Mercury indicates that he will eventually marry a clever, witty and creative person (possibly an artist or musician), and that they will have a big family.

Mars in Aries contributes to Rupert’s physical appearance: he is of medium height and quite athletic, has red hair and freckles. However, people with Aries and/or Mars rising are usually high-strung, choleric and hyperactive – quite unlike our “sleepy” and “laid-back” Rupert! Still, underneath his sleepy appearance, Rupert can be quite headstrong, energetic, independent, self-willed, driven, a true go-getter, someone who enjoys competition, likes to set his own goals, do his own stunts and impress others. When challenged by anyone for anything, he delights in the competitive process. He likes excitement, enjoys hanging out with his buddies, and likes all sorts of “male” activities: fast cars, sports, martial arts, pumping iron and being outdoors. He also likes to build and construct things, or repair cars or something like that.

Mars sextile Jupiter accentuates Rupert’s good health, physical stamina, and manual dexterity. It also gives him luck when it comes to his financial investments. However he should be careful not to assign his “friends” to handle his money, because they might lead him into financial ruin. Instead he should hire good lawyers and invest wisely, as he has got a good chance of increasing his fortune through careful investments. He is not a natural born gambler, and should not gamble.

With Mercury in its ruling sign Virgo, Rupert displays a tendency to study everything in detail. His desire for exactness and minute investigation is of practical importance since he wants to utilise his intellectual abilities for financial (and other) success. He likes to organise, classify and analyse things, and he may refine and revise everything he does until it is, in his mind, perfect. When filming, he does not mind repeating a scene over and over again, until he is sure that he has nailed it. He is attracted to practical, useful skills and good at any manual work. Mercury gives Rupert great stores of wisdom and confirms his common sense and the ability to memorise his lines easily. He is a very practical, analytical, critical person. Despite his “sleepy” appearance, his mind is active 24/7, noticing, dissecting and categorising stuff around him all the time. He likes to rely on his common sense and values honesty above all else. Mercury in Virgo makes him quite coy, especially when around strangers. He will rather keep silent than say something stupid. Nevertheless, when necessary, he is able to speak up and be an inspirational and convincing orator. Oh, and he can spend hours texting!

Mercury sextile Venus bestows a harmony between the mind and feelings. It also instils literary, artistic and musical talent into him, makes him good-looking and gives him a pleasant voice. This aspect also calms him down, and makes him a very pleasant, well-mannered, easy-going, always-smiling, diplomatic and friendly person. He is very charming and well-loved by everyone who knows him. He loves everything fair and just, and people find him a low-maintenance person, easy to collaborate with. He is certainly not a drama queen! This aspect confirms that Rupert has been able to earn a lot of money as an actor/performer/entertainer. On a more mundane level, it gives him a great fashion sense, and a nice and legible handwriting! This aspect gives Rupert lots of friends, especially female ones, of course many fans, and further accentuates his compassionate and charitable nature.

(blue = good aspects, red = bad aspects, black = neutral aspects)

First of all, let’s note that none of Rupert’s planets aspect Dan’s natal Sun (and Sun is Dan’s ruling planet, i.e. the planet that represents him), while none of Dan’s planets aspect Rupert’s Mercury (and Mercury is Rupert’s ruling planet). This fact alone clearly indicates that they are not as close as Harry and Ron, nor they’ll ever be. Of course, this does not mean that they can’t be friends, but they are definitely not spiritual brothers like Harry and Ron. Thus, their fantastic on-screen chemistry is – acted.

(Sorry Danpert shippers – ain’t gonna happen!)

The aspects between their charts suggest that Dan and Rupert do get along well most of the time, but they can never be as comfortable around each other as they might be in the company of some other, more compatible people. As you might have deducted yourself from reading their individual charts’ analyses, they are two very different people, who don’t really have much in common, except for the fact that they’re both actors and that by the time HP wraps they’ll have spent ten years working together.

Let’s talk about the good sides of their friendship first. The best aspect between their charts is Venus conjunct Sun. This aspect indicates a great basic compatibility, and enables them to get along well in an artistic environment (such as a movie set). They can enjoy many social events together, and they know how to have fun together. Rupert is attracted to Dan’s sunny, flamboyant and cheerful personality, while Dan appreciates Rupert’s good nature and earthiness. Dan inspires Rupert to open up a bit, while Rupert likes to be entertained by Dan. They love and respect each other, they’re willing to meet each others’ expectations and able to work well together.

Venus trine Uranus is an extremely fun aspect. Dan considers Rupert a very unusual, yet fascinating person; on the other hand, Rupert is greatly amused by Dan’s antics. Dan admires Rupert’s natural gifts, his great instincts and creative potential: he is indeed a Rupert fan! On the other hand, Rupert wishes he were as charming, self-confident and easygoing as Dan, and craves his social skills. They have a similar sense of humour, and they “get” each others’ jokes! Their relationship is never boring, and they always think of new ways to keep each other on their feet. They function best in big social groups and events, and may support some causes together. Of course, they have been put in numerous exciting situations together, both on and off screen, and their friendship is coloured by glamour, celebrity, success, wealth and worldwide admiration.

Uranus trine Sun is an aspect with great potential for mutual personal growth. As we all know, they met and developed their friendship in very unusual circumstances; but this was a fortunate encounter, as they’re both able to bring out the best in each other. They know each other well, they know how different they are, and they have their own ways of communicating with each other. Dan encourages Rupert to be himself, and Rupert makes Dan feel like he belongs in the social group/environment they are a part of. They are not dependent on each other: even when forced to spend long days together, they give each other enough room to breath, and encourage mutual independence. They may spend long periods without actually seeing each other; they both need these breaks. But once they meet up again, they resume their friendship as if they’ve only just seen each other yesterday. They will continue having this type of relationship in the many years to come: although they won’t be forced to spend as much time together, they will not lose touch with each other. On the negative side, Dan wants to keep Rupert on his feet all the time, but Rupert might find Dan’s constant desire for change, challenge and excitement quite tiring.

Since they were born within a year, they have mutual conjunctions of several “transcendental” planets; the most interesting aspect is Saturn conjunct Neptune. This means that they share the same unusual destiny, and sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference between who they really are and their public/movie personas. As a “fixed” person, Dan has firm attitudes and beliefs; but Rupert’s “mutable” nature might frequently shake Dan, making him feel disorientated. This aspect may result in one provoking the inner turmoil and self deprecation in the other one, but in the long run it helps them grow up and gain wisdom well beyond their age. Dan tends to see things in black and white, while Rupert is aware of the myriad of colourful nuances. Dan’s practical and thrifty side is constantly challenged by Rupert’s dreamy idealism; on the other hand, Dan finds Rupert quite irresponsible on occasion, and probably tells him frequently that he should find ways to cash on his gifts better. Rupert may feel quite pressured by Dan, and there is also danger of miscommunication, because Dan likes to express himself openly, directly and clearly, and often has difficulty decoding Rupert’s ciphered messages.

Mercury sextile Jupiter is another good aspect, which means that Dan invigorates Rupert’s thinking process, making him able to clearly and lucidly express his desires and affections. When Rupert is honest with Dan, he can expect the same in return. Dan makes him ready to tackle problems, and to communicate with others better. In essence, this is a relationship between a disciple (Dan) and his mentor (Rupert): Rupert might help Dan gain deeper insights; he may support and encourage him. They like to play games and sports together. When they work, Dan throws in new ideas all the time, while Rupert makes sure they’re executed correctly.

Now, the not-so-good aspects. Rupert’s quirky conjunction of Saturn and Uranus in Sagittarius badly affects Dan’s sentimental Moon in Pisces. As we have seen, despite his calm demeanour, there is an element of unpredictability in Rupert: he can be both shy and goofy, cautious and adventurous, conservative and rebellious at the same time! As a “fixed” person, Dan doesn’t really appreciate Rupert’s “mutability”; as a very emotional and choleric bloke, Dan may find Rupert quite cold, aloof, detached and difficult. On the other hand, Rupert may find Dan quite childish, loud, bossy, intrusive and nosy. Saturn square Moon and Uranus square Moon indicate that they run into conflicts quite often. Dan may frequently feel that Rupert cold-showers his enthusiasm, or ridicules his over(t)ly emotional nature. On the other hand, Rupert may think that Dan is an unbearable drama queen, and thus he may find it difficult to sympathise with him. They can go to extremes, from deliberately grating on each other’s nerves, to practically ignoring each other. And then they go back to being friends again, and the circle repeats itself.

Although Rupert is only a year older than Dan, he often treats him like a kid, and plays a kind of a “father figure” to him. Dan may feel that he can’t penetrate through Rupert’s armour, despite all his efforts. So, he runs away whining about Rupert’s aloofness, leaving the latter even more convinced that Dan needs to grow up and stop dramatising everything! Dan’s fiery temperament is constantly stiffened by Rupert’s quiet stoicism; Dan’s need for admiration and emotional reassurance constantly bumps into the wall of Rupert’s disinterest; and Dan’s need for simple and direct answers is drowned into the ocean of Rupert’s fluid and dreamy complexities. “Yes or no?!” screams Dan impatiently. “There is no yes or no, only a myriad of states between these two,” answers Rupert wisely, to Dan’s great annoyance.

Dan thinks of Rupert as an enigma, someone quite difficult to figure out. Dan likes to speak up openly, say exactly what he thinks, and expects the others to do the same; but, with Rupert, he often finds himself confused, and it drives him mad. They might inhibit each others’ expression, and have difficulty confiding and fully trusting each other. They can make each other feel isolated, self-critical and moody. Although they were very young when they first met, they must have realised very quickly that they would be sentenced to spend long years together. Some authors term the Moon/Saturn aspects a “carmic” bond, because being with each other is a learning process for them both. Rupert doesn’t know how to react when Dan expresses his feelings openly, because it awakens his latent fears and inhibitions. Thus he reacts by limiting his emotional expression and assuming a “parental” role. When together, they tend to focus on the work at hand, and they might develop an attachment to material things, as a means of securing stability. Whenever one of them is negative it has a profoundly depressive effect on the other one.

Moon square Uranus indicates that these two are quite fascinated by each other, but unable to figure out the other party. But now that they have grown older and more mature, they have probably learned how to relax around each other and show weaknesses without fear of being ridiculed. They have been destined to grow up together, which has forced them to get to know each other better and work on overcoming their differences. Thus, a catchphrase that sums up their relationship is “Better the Devil you know!”

Rupert’s Saturn and Uranus are also opposed to Dan’s Jupiter in Gemini. These aspect amplify the conflicts indicated by Moon square Saturn&Uranus. Dan’s restless, “hyper”, impatient and intolerant nature urges him to constantly “strike out” on his own and do things his own way. Thus he finds delight in neglecting other people’s opinions and advices – especially Rupert’s! These aspects may indicate their occasional mutual disrespect. Rupert is irritated by Dan’s grandiose, flamboyant self-righteousness, while Dan feels that Rupert constantly scrutinises him and stiffens his enthusiasm.

The numerous aspects with Saturn indicate that 90% of conflicts arise because the two of them were forced to WORK together since their childhood days and carry the weight of pressures that being part of the Harry Potter phenomenon brings. This is particularly emphasised by their double mutual aspects between Mars and Saturn. Somehow, the practical concerns (i.e. work) have always taken precedence in their relationship, and prevented them from being – just kids. They always had to think of the “good of the company” (i.e. movie studio) and suppress their spontaneous reactions. Add to this the pressures put by parents, fans, media, movie critics etc. – it’s unbelievable that these two haven’t lost their minds yet! Thus, Rupert and Dan could never be completely comfortable around each other, because the entire burden of expectations, responsibilities and competitiveness has always stood in the way and made it difficult for them to express their true thoughts and feelings around each other. They get along best in a non-working environment, which allows them to loosen up and just have fun together and enjoy each other’s company.

Dan’s Neptune afflicts Rupert’s Mars, indicating that Dan makes Rupert feel even more of a “loner” than he already is. Dan may be quite unsupportive of Rupert’s endeavours, and Rupert might find having to live in Dan’s shadow a rather unpleasant experience. On a positive side, they make each other sit back and reflect on past accomplishments and see what could have been done better.

To conclude, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint are two very different people, who have been united by their extraordinary destiny. Theirs is a carmic bond, and being together has been a learning process for both boys. They are coworkers first – because they have to be – but they are friends too. In nearly ten years that they have spent together, their friendship has been through many ups and downs, as they have both grown and matured. Quite amazingly, their friendship has endured all the immense professional pressures and media scrutiny, and it will actually flourish once they have closed the HP chapter in their lives and gained more freedom. Saturn and Neptune sextile Pluto indicate that Dan and Rupert empower each other to do great things. When they’re together, they buckle down and get their work done. They have learned that working hard now pays off a great deal later. They have helped each other summon up discipline to complete the job at hand, as well as plan for the future both financially and socially. Rupert admires Dan’s ambition and dedication, and this in turn inspires him to do his best. And vice versa. In the future, they might occasionally turn to each other for guidance, and it will be great fun to see them in twenty years time, as middle aged men, when they meet up to recall their golden years together!

Once Upon A Ginger

Or: how Carolyn cheated on Colin Farrell!

The start of my Harry Potter fandom is a bit blurry. I honestly don’t remember ever hearing about the books. Which is odd because I love to read. Maybe I just didn’t pay proper attention. I don’t even remember how I heard about the first film coming out. All I can guess is that it looked interesting when I saw the trailer. I love English movies. I love Fantasy movies. I love movies you can escape into. So Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone looked like something I would be interested in. It looked very gothic, and with witchcraft as its main theme, I knew I wanted to see it. Anything otherwordly and I’m hooked.

carolyn3I was instantly taken in by the little red haired boy. He was the cutest thing I’d ever seen in my life. He was so animated and funny and talented. I was instantly a fan. But I only thought about him whenever the new Potter movie was out. I didn’t pay much attention to anything about the movies in between them. I just made sure I taped them when they aired on TV so I could have them as part of my vast collection.

It wasn’t until the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire came out that Cupid’s bow nailed me right between the eyes. I was attracted to Rupert Grint. carolyn1 I mean, I’ve always thought he was an adorable boy, but now I was just enamored with him. The Goblet Of Fire era had me sitting up and taking notice. I would watch the movies over and over again, only keeping my eyes on Rupert. I still didn’t take my fanship any further than that, though. It didn’t really occur to me to hunt down anything about Rupert. My online activities from 2003-2008 were devoted to another actor, Colin Farrell.

Around 2007 though, during the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix promotions, is when I started taping various shows or coverage of Harry Potter that featured Rupert. I would also make sure to keep those tapes close by so that I could watch them whenever I chose.

It wasn’t until mid-2008 that I got into the online fandom. It was like something shifted in me. I tried to fight it for awhile. I would look at all the scrapbooks and collages that I collected and the thousands of pictures of various people, places and things that I had and thought, “Maybe I should start adding Rupert to these.” Now is when I started arguing with myself in my head. “No, it’s too much trouble.”, “I can’t start hunting for pictures of him now. It’s too overwhelming.”, “Are you sure you want to get involved in all this? What about Colin?” I felt like a cheating spouse! But then I just dived right in and never looked back. Sorry Colin!

carolyn2I started hunting around for sites I could join and pictures I could save. Then there were all the online videos that I had never seen before. I thought, “Where have I been all this time???” After coming to terms with the fact that, YES! I am crazy attracted to Rupert Grint and I have to stop fighting it and wearing out my Goblet Of Fire tape and just “come out”, so to speak, everything just opened up for me. I came across a delightful forum called Ice Cream Man and that’s all she wrote. My first night on the forum, a bunch of us got into a discussion about how angelic Rupert looks and someone got a hold of pictures of various Angels, one that was Rupert’s twin! Our own little Botticelli Angel. I was so excited to have discovered this place and found I didn’t need any other sites.

Since joining Ice Cream Man in October of 2008, I have been happily drowning in that Ginger god Rupert Grint. I’m also happy to say I have almost completed my third reading of all the Harry Potter books, which are amazing. I’m glad I started reading them later because now I picture the movie actors when I read the books. And for me, there is no other “Ron Weasley” than Rupert Grint. He captures and envelops that character like he does all the other characters he’s played and will play. Amazing actor that he is, I know Rupert will be around for a long time to come. With good looks, talent and the sweetest heart, how could he not be?

And that is my story of becoming a Rupert Grint fan. Something I am very proud to call myself.

Smells Like Rupert Grint!

Following in the footsteps of men like P Diddy and David Beckham, Rupert Grint has decided to try his hand at creating a scent to make any man irresistible to a woman. “I began noticing that every time I would hug a fan they would take a big whiff of my neck,” says Grint on finding the inspiration for his first cologne named WICKED.

On coming up with the name Grint said: “When they let me smell the first official batch, I told them it was wicked and the name just stuck.”

Creating the scent was not as easy as naming it however. “We tried a lot of different things like ginger root and old chucks, but those didn’t work so well,” said Grint.

The final scent is said to be modeled after Grint’s actual personal scent and is a combination of many things including meat seasoning, vanilla ice cream, cider, petrol, lucozade, and freshly cut grass from Grint’s favorite golf course.

Rupert Grint Makes A Funny!

First there was the Ice Cream Van and now Rupert Grint is fulfilling another childhood fantasy. Rupert has decided to finally put pencil to paper and has begun drawing his own original comic strip. “The Funnies were always my favorite part of the Sunday paper,” says Grint,”and one morning I thought about how wicked it would be to have something I drew in there.”

The strip entitled SHUPERT follows a young ginger by the name of Shupert Clint as he goes on many hilarious adventures on the quest for the perfect prank with his two best friends Gemma Voltson and Manuel Radledge. The trio’s good times are hindered however by the evil school principal named Mr. Groves, who is determined to make sure Shupert never reaches his full prankster potential. Have no fear though, because with brilliant Gemma and quirky Manuel at his side, Shupert shows that no one can stop him from reaching his goal.

When asked on the alluded to “more than friends” relationship between Shupert and Gemma, Grint said “Well, Em and, um, I mean Gemma and Shupert are just really great mates right now.” This lead to the inevitable question of whether this strip was art imitating life for Rupert Grint to which he replied “Yeah, I mean, not really, but I guess maybe a little.”
