First of all, let’s note that none of Rupert’s planets aspect Dan’s natal Sun (and Sun is Dan’s ruling planet, i.e. the planet that represents him), while none of Dan’s planets aspect Rupert’s Mercury (and Mercury is Rupert’s ruling planet). This fact alone clearly indicates that they are not as close as Harry and Ron, nor they’ll ever be. Of course, this does not mean that they can’t be friends, but they are definitely not spiritual brothers like Harry and Ron. Thus, their fantastic on-screen chemistry is – acted.
(Sorry Danpert shippers – ain’t gonna happen!)
The aspects between their charts suggest that Dan and Rupert do get along well most of the time, but they can never be as comfortable around each other as they might be in the company of some other, more compatible people. As you might have deducted yourself from reading their individual charts’ analyses, they are two very different people, who don’t really have much in common, except for the fact that they’re both actors and that by the time HP wraps they’ll have spent ten years working together.
Let’s talk about the good sides of their friendship first. The best aspect between their charts is Venus conjunct Sun. This aspect indicates a great basic compatibility, and enables them to get along well in an artistic environment (such as a movie set). They can enjoy many social events together, and they know how to have fun together. Rupert is attracted to Dan’s sunny, flamboyant and cheerful personality, while Dan appreciates Rupert’s good nature and earthiness. Dan inspires Rupert to open up a bit, while Rupert likes to be entertained by Dan. They love and respect each other, they’re willing to meet each others’ expectations and able to work well together.
Venus trine Uranus is an extremely fun aspect. Dan considers Rupert a very unusual, yet fascinating person; on the other hand, Rupert is greatly amused by Dan’s antics. Dan admires Rupert’s natural gifts, his great instincts and creative potential: he is indeed a Rupert fan! On the other hand, Rupert wishes he were as charming, self-confident and easygoing as Dan, and craves his social skills. They have a similar sense of humour, and they “get” each others’ jokes! Their relationship is never boring, and they always think of new ways to keep each other on their feet. They function best in big social groups and events, and may support some causes together. Of course, they have been put in numerous exciting situations together, both on and off screen, and their friendship is coloured by glamour, celebrity, success, wealth and worldwide admiration.
Uranus trine Sun is an aspect with great potential for mutual personal growth. As we all know, they met and developed their friendship in very unusual circumstances; but this was a fortunate encounter, as they’re both able to bring out the best in each other. They know each other well, they know how different they are, and they have their own ways of communicating with each other. Dan encourages Rupert to be himself, and Rupert makes Dan feel like he belongs in the social group/environment they are a part of. They are not dependent on each other: even when forced to spend long days together, they give each other enough room to breath, and encourage mutual independence. They may spend long periods without actually seeing each other; they both need these breaks. But once they meet up again, they resume their friendship as if they’ve only just seen each other yesterday. They will continue having this type of relationship in the many years to come: although they won’t be forced to spend as much time together, they will not lose touch with each other. On the negative side, Dan wants to keep Rupert on his feet all the time, but Rupert might find Dan’s constant desire for change, challenge and excitement quite tiring.
Since they were born within a year, they have mutual conjunctions of several “transcendental” planets; the most interesting aspect is Saturn conjunct Neptune. This means that they share the same unusual destiny, and sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference between who they really are and their public/movie personas. As a “fixed” person, Dan has firm attitudes and beliefs; but Rupert’s “mutable” nature might frequently shake Dan, making him feel disorientated. This aspect may result in one provoking the inner turmoil and self deprecation in the other one, but in the long run it helps them grow up and gain wisdom well beyond their age. Dan tends to see things in black and white, while Rupert is aware of the myriad of colourful nuances. Dan’s practical and thrifty side is constantly challenged by Rupert’s dreamy idealism; on the other hand, Dan finds Rupert quite irresponsible on occasion, and probably tells him frequently that he should find ways to cash on his gifts better. Rupert may feel quite pressured by Dan, and there is also danger of miscommunication, because Dan likes to express himself openly, directly and clearly, and often has difficulty decoding Rupert’s ciphered messages.
Mercury sextile Jupiter is another good aspect, which means that Dan invigorates Rupert’s thinking process, making him able to clearly and lucidly express his desires and affections. When Rupert is honest with Dan, he can expect the same in return. Dan makes him ready to tackle problems, and to communicate with others better. In essence, this is a relationship between a disciple (Dan) and his mentor (Rupert): Rupert might help Dan gain deeper insights; he may support and encourage him. They like to play games and sports together. When they work, Dan throws in new ideas all the time, while Rupert makes sure they’re executed correctly.
Now, the not-so-good aspects. Rupert’s quirky conjunction of Saturn and Uranus in Sagittarius badly affects Dan’s sentimental Moon in Pisces. As we have seen, despite his calm demeanour, there is an element of unpredictability in Rupert: he can be both shy and goofy, cautious and adventurous, conservative and rebellious at the same time! As a “fixed” person, Dan doesn’t really appreciate Rupert’s “mutability”; as a very emotional and choleric bloke, Dan may find Rupert quite cold, aloof, detached and difficult. On the other hand, Rupert may find Dan quite childish, loud, bossy, intrusive and nosy. Saturn square Moon and Uranus square Moon indicate that they run into conflicts quite often. Dan may frequently feel that Rupert cold-showers his enthusiasm, or ridicules his over(t)ly emotional nature. On the other hand, Rupert may think that Dan is an unbearable drama queen, and thus he may find it difficult to sympathise with him. They can go to extremes, from deliberately grating on each other’s nerves, to practically ignoring each other. And then they go back to being friends again, and the circle repeats itself.
Although Rupert is only a year older than Dan, he often treats him like a kid, and plays a kind of a “father figure” to him. Dan may feel that he can’t penetrate through Rupert’s armour, despite all his efforts. So, he runs away whining about Rupert’s aloofness, leaving the latter even more convinced that Dan needs to grow up and stop dramatising everything! Dan’s fiery temperament is constantly stiffened by Rupert’s quiet stoicism; Dan’s need for admiration and emotional reassurance constantly bumps into the wall of Rupert’s disinterest; and Dan’s need for simple and direct answers is drowned into the ocean of Rupert’s fluid and dreamy complexities. “Yes or no?!” screams Dan impatiently. “There is no yes or no, only a myriad of states between these two,” answers Rupert wisely, to Dan’s great annoyance.
Dan thinks of Rupert as an enigma, someone quite difficult to figure out. Dan likes to speak up openly, say exactly what he thinks, and expects the others to do the same; but, with Rupert, he often finds himself confused, and it drives him mad. They might inhibit each others’ expression, and have difficulty confiding and fully trusting each other. They can make each other feel isolated, self-critical and moody. Although they were very young when they first met, they must have realised very quickly that they would be sentenced to spend long years together. Some authors term the Moon/Saturn aspects a “carmic” bond, because being with each other is a learning process for them both. Rupert doesn’t know how to react when Dan expresses his feelings openly, because it awakens his latent fears and inhibitions. Thus he reacts by limiting his emotional expression and assuming a “parental” role. When together, they tend to focus on the work at hand, and they might develop an attachment to material things, as a means of securing stability. Whenever one of them is negative it has a profoundly depressive effect on the other one.
Moon square Uranus indicates that these two are quite fascinated by each other, but unable to figure out the other party. But now that they have grown older and more mature, they have probably learned how to relax around each other and show weaknesses without fear of being ridiculed. They have been destined to grow up together, which has forced them to get to know each other better and work on overcoming their differences. Thus, a catchphrase that sums up their relationship is “Better the Devil you know!”
Rupert’s Saturn and Uranus are also opposed to Dan’s Jupiter in Gemini. These aspect amplify the conflicts indicated by Moon square Saturn&Uranus. Dan’s restless, “hyper”, impatient and intolerant nature urges him to constantly “strike out” on his own and do things his own way. Thus he finds delight in neglecting other people’s opinions and advices – especially Rupert’s! These aspects may indicate their occasional mutual disrespect. Rupert is irritated by Dan’s grandiose, flamboyant self-righteousness, while Dan feels that Rupert constantly scrutinises him and stiffens his enthusiasm.
The numerous aspects with Saturn indicate that 90% of conflicts arise because the two of them were forced to WORK together since their childhood days and carry the weight of pressures that being part of the Harry Potter phenomenon brings. This is particularly emphasised by their double mutual aspects between Mars and Saturn. Somehow, the practical concerns (i.e. work) have always taken precedence in their relationship, and prevented them from being – just kids. They always had to think of the “good of the company” (i.e. movie studio) and suppress their spontaneous reactions. Add to this the pressures put by parents, fans, media, movie critics etc. – it’s unbelievable that these two haven’t lost their minds yet! Thus, Rupert and Dan could never be completely comfortable around each other, because the entire burden of expectations, responsibilities and competitiveness has always stood in the way and made it difficult for them to express their true thoughts and feelings around each other. They get along best in a non-working environment, which allows them to loosen up and just have fun together and enjoy each other’s company.
Dan’s Neptune afflicts Rupert’s Mars, indicating that Dan makes Rupert feel even more of a “loner” than he already is. Dan may be quite unsupportive of Rupert’s endeavours, and Rupert might find having to live in Dan’s shadow a rather unpleasant experience. On a positive side, they make each other sit back and reflect on past accomplishments and see what could have been done better.
To conclude, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint are two very different people, who have been united by their extraordinary destiny. Theirs is a carmic bond, and being together has been a learning process for both boys. They are coworkers first – because they have to be – but they are friends too. In nearly ten years that they have spent together, their friendship has been through many ups and downs, as they have both grown and matured. Quite amazingly, their friendship has endured all the immense professional pressures and media scrutiny, and it will actually flourish once they have closed the HP chapter in their lives and gained more freedom. Saturn and Neptune sextile Pluto indicate that Dan and Rupert empower each other to do great things. When they’re together, they buckle down and get their work done. They have learned that working hard now pays off a great deal later. They have helped each other summon up discipline to complete the job at hand, as well as plan for the future both financially and socially. Rupert admires Dan’s ambition and dedication, and this in turn inspires him to do his best. And vice versa. In the future, they might occasionally turn to each other for guidance, and it will be great fun to see them in twenty years time, as middle aged men, when they meet up to recall their golden years together!
